So I went to see the film version of one of my favourite books ever around 2 weeks ago. After that tearful experience, Me and Georgia from The Books Bandit decided to do a joint review Q&A style. The challenge is, however, that we did this on Twitter meaning we only had 140 characters to express our thoughts! We stuck to it.. kind of.. For the purpose of this Q&A, I'll be in Bold Blue, and Georgia in Grey Italics: ENJOY!
What did you think of the first five minutes?
They were perfect! My eyes were already watering from the If I Stay trailer, and then it was 5 mins of sheer perfection and anticipation!
What was your first impression of Hazel?
Hah, hah! Um, I love the character but I think that a different actress should've played her.
What did you think on the overall film? :)
I loved every single aspect of it. I could not have asked for a better adaptation. It was perfect from the characters to the script!!
So which casting choices pleased you?
The guy who played Isaac and Ansel-OMG he was like the Augustus I dreamed of! Mr and Ms Lancaster were also brilliant!
AGREED! I FELL IN LOVE WITH GUS ALL OVER AGAIN!
Did you think the film was exactly like the book?
I think it was one of the most faithful adaptations I've seen. Granted, I haven't read the book in a while but it seemed great!!
Hah, hah same!
What was your favourite scene??
Ummmmmmmmmmm, the Peter Van Houton part the part when Hazel gets back to the airport when Mr Lancaster had the sign saying "My beautiful family. (Augustus) And the first support group.
I love those bits too! My favourite part, though, was the egging scene! I LOVE that bit! It's a brief infinity of happiness before I dissolved into a puddle of tears!
Did you find any mistakes in the film?
None, I don't think!
I always love it when films are true to the book!!
When did you start crying in the film?
From the first five minutes! :) What were your thoughts on Amsterdam?
Ahaha, SAME! Amsterdam was exactly what I pictured, and it hit me right in the feels! I really hope to go one day!
YAY! I want to go there next year!
Ooh! I hope you do!! I intend to go to a lot of bookish locations one day!!
What was your favourite line that they included from the book??
Maybe our okay will be our always.
What about yours?
Hmm.. Let me think..? I love all the tear inducing lines, I hate the rollercoaster line because JOHN GREEN LIED TO ME WITH THAT LINE.
Yes he did! *Dies* *Gives tissues*
My favourite line, though? Probably 'It's a Metaphor.'
What scene did you cry at the most??
The part when Gus was at the gas station and also when the funeral begun.
I don't think I can name something the saddest part, but the ugly-crying started with the flashbacks..
Do you think there should be a sequel?
NOOOO. NO SEQUEL. NO SEQUEL. THEY BETTER NOT GO RUIN MY LITTLE BOOK WITH THEIR SMALL MINDS THAT ARE TRYING TO MAKE MONEY.
*bows* thank you
What's your rant on the idea of a sequel?
Well, I've always thought that in the future Hazel hooks up with Isaac and then they get married. But as Isaac said in the movie, I can never see a world without Augustus Waters. But if John ever writes another book, I might as well go to hell as I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE IN THE FEELS!
What was your view towards the end?
My view... Well, through the waterfall rushing down my face I did manage to catch the ending and a chorus of sniffles all around me..
Being serious, my view throughout the whole thing was: I am falling in love with Augustus Waters all over again ;)
What did you think of the soundtrack?? I personally loved it!
I may have downloaded nearly all the songs. Boom Clap was the best! *Starts singing*
YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES! I could listen to Boom Clap on repeat for hours and not get bored!!
What was the best bit of the movie?
Umm.. AM I ALLOWED TO SAY EVERY BIT??
How did you feel after the movie?
Well, I was a wreck. Yep, I was a sobbing mess who had just relived the book all over again. I like to think of it as a beautiful pain. ;)
Pain demands to be felt.
WAY TO HIT ME IN THE FEEELS
I may or may not have read that in his voice.
Just like I literally sat there mouthing the lines of the film..
After you had wallowed in your feels for a few days, did you feel like you would watch it again?
Yes! I felt like that the moment the credits began!! :) The feels are still with me!!!
*hugs you* Aww!! I was the same!!
There you have it! I hope you enjoyed that little conversation, and that you go see the film soon- make sure to read the book first though, I PROMISE it's worth it! ;)
