The Host by Stephanie Meyer

 Hi guys!
Here's a review on the Host. It's a book I absolutely loved and made me cry my eyes out a few times...

Title: The Host
Author: Stephanie Meyer
Series: The Host #1
Published: May 6th 2008
No. of Pages: 617
Rating: 5 stars

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading 'soul' who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

 My Thoughts:

Lets starts off this way: I have never been a fan of twilight, never seen the movies and even though I have the first book in my possession, I was side tracked by Harry Potter, yet again.
Even though I have a grudge against vampires, I have to say, Stephanie Meyer you are an awesome writer.
The Host is beautifully written. It is in 1st person and comes from Wanda's point of view as well as Melanie's thoughts meaning that you get a complete sense of what both characters are feeling which is crucial to the story.
Melanie Stryder is in a way one of the main characters, well her body, thoughts and memories are, just her body is occupied by a wiggly, silvery thing. In this case: Wanderer, a.k.a Wanda.
After jumping into an elevator shaft in an escape attempt, (you'll see why this is in bold in a later post.) Melanie fails to die. (That sounds really depressing doesn't it?) Instead she is healed and has Wanda placed inside her.
Melanie isn't supposed to resist occupation, but we find Wanda struggling to get a grip on who she is as Melanie continues to speak to her, blocking  crucial memories as well. Melanie's grip is so tight that Wanda starts to yearn for the people Melanie loves: Jared and Jamie. Wanda slowly forms a bond with Melanie and they both start to empathize with each others situations (which was very heart warming to read.)
After forming this bond, Wanda  eventually sets out in a search for the human resistance, where she hopes to find Jamie, her brother, and Jared, her boyfriend. She treks through a desert, eventually collapsing but being found by Uncle Jeb! However, everyone (except Uncle Jeb, Jamie and Ian after a while) finds it hard to trust Wanda, thinking that she is carrying out some plan to hand them over to the seekers. It was truly painful to watch Wanda being slapped silly by at least two people in the beginning (Aunt Maggie and Jared) and then nearly being drowned!
Slowly, she earns people's trust and starts to partake in everyday activities. We see her go on raids, lie to seekers and the most confusing but awesome love triangle/square ever!

Situation: Melanie loves Jared, which means a part of Wanda also does, but Jared only loves Melanie. Meanwhile, Ian loves Wanda and a part of Wanda loves Ian but Melanie doesn't love Ian. Got it?

I have to say that it had a perfect ending, which I never could have invented because the problem is that you want Melanie to get her body back but you don't want Wanda to go away but that is the only way for Melanie to come back so you sit around moping for a few hours...

My favourite characters have to be Uncle Jeb and Jamie. Jamie is adorable and you can help but just love him. Uncle Jeb makes you laugh and you warm to this character, the first character to have any belief in Wanda, so easily.

Favourite Quote:
“Thank you, Wanda. My sister. I will never forget you.
Be happy, Mel. Enjoy it all. Appreciate it for me.”
